The initiative also received a great deal of positive attention from a wide selection of community organisations working across the Edinburgh Westward area.

One of the most popular sections of the prototype website was ‘The GD Online Survey’. The survey was specifically created to enable those living and working within Gorgie Dalry to have a clear say in the ongoing development of The GD initiative. The objective was to gather information at a grassroots level as to which online services and content structure would be of maximum interest and benefit to the local community.

Over the next few months, material gathered during the initial development stage will be used to create a detailed business plan. The aim will be to secure the funding required to launch The GD as an independent social enterprise project early in 2010.

Race Online 2012

Race Online 2012 is a national challenge to help 4 million socially and digitally excluded people get online by the London Olympics.

Most of us take the internet for granted. Over the years the project's core objective of providing training for the 50+ age group in computing and the internet has gone from strength to strength and become a model for computer training organisations across Scotland (and beyond). In addition, ACE IT has both instigated and developed in partnership with other organisations a wide range of social inclusion and community web development initiatives including the ACE IT Silver Surfers Festival, the multi-award winning 'Edinburgh Silver Surfers' and the 'Moose In The Hoose' project.

At a personal level, involvement with ACE IT has greatly helped me in relation to discovering ways and methods of working around my own disabilities and also in developing my own creative and web design skills. There has also been a number of unforgettable and amazing moments along the way - such as the day the Edinburgh Silver Surfers visited Edinburgh Castle to assist in firing the world famous 'One O'clock Cannon' (Visit) - The exclusive VIP guided tour of H.M.S Edinburgh (Visit) - The discovery of lost music from the Isle of St Kilda (Visit) - And the moment we realised that the photographs provided by a member of the People's War Group recording in detail the surrender of the German U-Boat fleet at the end of WW2 (Visit) - Were not available anywhere else on the web!

From Management Committee - To Staff and Volunteers - To clients and members of the project's outreach programmes... Everyone involved with ACE IT is delighted, honoured and thrilled to have reached the final stages of the Nominet Best Practice Challenge. Win or lose - the nomination alone is seen by all as positive recognition that the hard work and outstanding effort shown across all aspects of the organisation are having a real grass-roots impact both within our own local communities and beyond.

Nominet Best Practice Challenge
- Best Development Project shortlist

ActNow Cornwall
Age Concern Edinburgh Information Technology (ACE IT)
Cambridgeshire Council's Community Access Points initiative
Childnet International
Citizens Online - EverybodyOnline
Solihull community housing and CI-Net

Links

Nominet Best Practice Challenge
Age Concern Edinburgh Information Technology (ACE IT)
Edinburgh Silver Surfers
The Moose In The Hoose Project

Scots Urged to Extend the Welcome to Year Long Celebration Inspired by Burns

Rt Hon Alex Salmond, MSP, First Minister of Scotland today (Monday 16 June), launched the country's first ever Homecoming year, at Edinburgh Castle.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5212645446172094914" style="FLOAT: left; It is an invitation to connect with Scotland's past and future, on a scale never seen before. Now we all need to make sure that Scots at home and abroad get the message."

Homecoming Scotland 2009 is a Scottish Government initiative being delivered by EventScotland in partnership with VisitScotland.

Paul Bush, Chief Operating Officer, EventScotland said: "As Scotland's national events agency, EventScotland is ideally placed to manage the delivery of Homecoming Scotland in 2009.

"EventScotland has already created a portfolio of world class events, ensuring Scotland capitalises on the growing trend of event tourism, and Homecoming is an extension of this work. We have worked with our public sector and event industry partners to create a tailored programme of events and festivals to inspire Scots worldwide to come home in 2009.

"The result of this enthusiasm is that 2009 will be a very exciting year, and will bring Scots, people with Scots ancestry, and those who simply love Scotland 'home' for this landmark year."

Commenting on the worldwide marketing of Homecoming, VisitScotland's Chairman Peter Lederer said: "We have already seen a great deal of interest in Homecoming 2009 from our key tourism markets and the fantastic range of events announced today is sure to be very popular with visitors. VisitScotland has been promoting Homecoming extensively, with Scotland in Toronto, New York's Scotland Week and a travel trade event in Australia just some examples of our recent activity. We will build on this success with a programme of marketing and PR which will promote Homecoming Scotland 2009 to potential visitors within the UK and around the world."

The event programme launched today is a key part of Homecoming. Marie Christie, Homecoming Scotland 2009 Project Director said: "In developing the programme so far we've had a fantastic response from organisations, large and small from every area in Scotland, who have really taken the concept of Homecoming to their hearts and have developed diverse and inspiring activity for 2009.

"The programme detail announced today is just the beginning of the Homecoming story, over the coming months we will be releasing more information and bringing more and more partners on board. We think there is something in the programme for everyone and we hope Scots, and those who love Scotland, at home and abroad will join the celebrations in 2009. It's an exciting year for Scotland, it's a great year to come home."

A key part of today's announcement was the call for Scots to get involved in Homecoming. Here's how:

Extend the invite: Whether you are a native Scot; part of Scotland's extended global family, or maybe you just love Scotland, spread the word by telling your friends and relatives wherever they live, about the special year of Homecoming and encourage them to join us in our 2009 celebrations.

Log on to the official Homecoming website: http://www.homecomingscotland2009.com/ and send an e-invite inviting friends and family home.

Sign up for the Homecoming Scotland newsletter and be the first to get updates on exciting events as well as general information about Homecoming: http://www.homecomingscotland2009.com/

For event organisers looking to develop Homecoming activities, contact the Homecoming Team who can assist with advice and in-kind marketing support. Whilst specifically created with Edinburgh in mind – the basic concept could also be applied and adapted to cover almost any region within the UK and in particular those areas with high levels of unemployment and social inclusion issues.

“The concept is based upon my own experiences both as a community worker of 20 years standing and as someone living on long-term incapacity benefits. The creative elements of the proposal have been developed from the skills and experience I have gained hosting the Edinburgh Internet Festival combined with my volunteer work across a number of web based community projects. When combined I believe my experience provides me with a unique insight and perspective which I have channelled into the creation of this proposal.

The cornerstone of the proposal is my passionate belief that digital and web technology offers exciting new possibilities for combating fundamental issues within local communities such as social exclusion and unemployment.

I also strongly believe that disabled people need to be included - and encouraged - to participate in the creation, implementation and development of initiatives aimed at providing opportunities to escape from benefits and re-enter employment.” - P.Steele. 2008

Further Information will be online via the Edinburgh Internet Festival 008 home page at www.scotfestival.com from 1st July 2008

To view an advance preview copy of the proposal E-mail: pol@scotfestival.com

Trove - A Guide To Edinburgh's Treasures

Trove is a new guide to the treasures of Edinburgh - The concept of which resulted from an invite to the Edinburgh Silver Surfers regarding a special guided tour of Lauriston Castle here in Edinburgh. As web designer and photographer with the surfers I accompanied the group on the trip and like everyone else was delighted by what we found.

While some form of residence has occupied the site since at least the 16th centaury - Lauriston Castle is today one of the UK's finest examples of an Edwardian country house. Loving restored and filled with the heirlooms and furniture of the last family to live there, the last surviving member of which gifted the property and its contents to Edinburgh Council to maintain on behalf of the people of Edinburgh.

Not only does the Castle provide a fascinating insight into Edwardian family life - the public gardens also offer one of the best views over the river forth I have ever come across!

During the visit I was struck with the realisation that even after almost 25 years living in a city I thought I knew inside and out - there were still places with the power to not only delight me - but also inspire the creative side of me.

Talking it over later with friends, I found I was not alone. Within minutes over a dozen places were named that all of us really wanted to visit but which none of us had ever managed to get to. It also came to light that each of us had favourite places that the others had never heard of - or were only faintly aware of.

Following on from all of this - I am delighted to announce the launch of 'TROVE' as part of this year's Edinburgh Internet Festival.

'TROVE - A Guide To Edinburgh's Treasures' is intended to encourage both visitors to the city and residents alike to spend some quality time exploring a few of the "Wee Gems" the capital has to offer - in addition to the outstanding attractions surrounding and including Edinburgh Castle!

'TROVE - A Guide To Edinburgh's Treasures'
Launched as part of the Edinburgh Internet Festival 2008
Online: www.scotfestival.com

Nominate a 'Treasure'
- Like to nominate an attraction or location for inclusion in Trove?
Please send your suggestion in an e-mail to festival2008@scotfestival.com

New Scotfestival Arts & However, as the festival grows in size each year - it gets harder and harder to promote and spread the word about what you are doing... This year you are competing with thousands of shows in the Fringe alone!

The Edinburgh Internet Festival launched it's first online Edinburgh festival guide in 1999 as a freely provided online platform for festival participants to promote their work. This year the E.I.I.Festival's 'Flipside - Edinburgh Festival Preview & Review Guide' returns with an even greater range of services than ever before!

Flipside Preview Guide
- Participating performers will receive a profile page featuring full details of their performance or event. The page can also contain a limited number of images alongside web versions of promotional material (poster/pamphlet/etc). Videos featured on myspace/ U-Tube relating to the Edinburgh festival can also be embed into profiles (max 2 per page). Links will also be provided to participants own website(s) and Myspace profiles.

Flipside Review
- The review section of the Flipside provides interviews with festival performers alongside regularly updated photo reviews of shows and events. If you would like your show featured in the review - You will have to provide two tickets for a performance and be willing to meet for an interview and photo session (usually 1 hour approx).

Festival2008 Community
- If you are performing in the Edinburgh Festival 2008... The E.I.I.Festival invites you to join our new online community where you can maintain your own profile - post photos and videos and participate in online debates relating to the festival (Online via scotfestival.com from July).

Additional Services
We can also provide extensive digital photography, web and graphic design services prior to your visit and for one or more days while you are in Edinburgh (without charge - places limited). In certain cases - free use of a computer with internet access is also available (if desperatly needed). If your own loacal media, radio or tv stations are interested in coverning your visit to the Edinburgh Festival - A telephone can be provided for interviews (incoming calls only) at arranged times.

While intended for use on the festival 2008 website - ALL material produced by the Edinburgh Internet Festival is freely turned over to the participants concerned with regards to future use
